Furyborn by Claire Legrand

“She was night itself reborn on earth, a queen swathed in shadows.”
Furyborn follows the stories of two girls: Rielle and Eliana. The only twist is Rielle lived about a thousand years before Eliana's story, yet their lives are intertwined in a crazy way. Rielle lives in Celdaria with her best friends: Audric and Ludivine. Audric is about to be King of Celdaria, and is engaged to Ludivine. To add a little S p i c e, their world is full of magic. Elemental power is strong and it's super cool. And, as if it wasn't spicy enough, Rielle soon learns that she can control all 7 of the elemental magics...which is something no one has ever been able to do.
Switch over to Eliana, we find a world without magic that is completely overrun by this terrible Emperor dude who has some major anger issues. Eliana is a bad ass bounty hunter who gets swept up into a wild journey when she finds her mother missing one night. Teaming up with a notorious rebel, her little brother, and a princess, Eliana finds herself swept into a brand new world that has secrets she not ready to learn.
“We live in a world where good kings die and those foolish enough to hope for something better are killed where they stand.”
It took me a hot minute to get into this book. There was a lot of hype surrounding it, so I was excited to start it. The world building is INSANE. It took me a lot of flipping back to the map and flipping back a few pages to get my bearings on who was who and where was where. There is an immense history pre-written into the novel that adds another layer of complexities. I'm not saying this ruined the book, but it did take me back into fully enjoying it until I could wrap my head around what the hell was going on.
Rielle is my absolute favorite. I think she is so cool and I think that she had the most interesting story line throughout the novel. The trials and her love for Audric and with the mix of Corien was so good. I know that she has been painted as a terrible person, so I'm excited to continue watching her life and to see what went wrong and how things got so messed up.
“Have you always been this unspeakably irritating?” “Has your face always looked so temptingly carvable?”
Eliana irritated me. Her attitude was awful and I really hated the persona she was trying to give off. I understand why she did it, but it grew to be really annoying. I really started enjoying her when she finally started to feel bad and get called out for her bullshit. I think she has a LONG way to go development wise, and I hope for her sake that she starts letting people in and stops making shitty decisions.
Simon rocks. That's all.
Corien is interesting. I know from Eliana's POV that he is utter trash, but right now he is an interesting threat, and I'm excited to see how he fully becomes what he is.
All in all, I liked this book. I am looking forward to the next book and to see if there is some cool character development and to learn more about Rielle and her life. These are heavy books with a lot of background information thrown at you quickly, but once you get into it, it's such a fun dive into a new world.
