Little Women by Louisa May Alcott

“I am not afraid of storms, for I am learning how to sail my ship.”

Little Women is a classic, yet I had never read it until now! My sister got me a scratch off poster of the top 100 classic books, and Little Women was on it, so it was destiny. I also saw this adorable edition at my local bookstore so it was DOUBLE destiny, really.

I had also seen the newer version of Little Women in theatres back in 2019, so I was prepared for all the little heartaches that this book would throw at me. I do wish that I could have taken on this book with no knowledge about it, but I couldn't not say no to Timothee and Saorise.

“Let us be elegant or die!”

I won't go too much into the background of the book, since it is a classic, and I'll just jump right into my thoughts. I really enjoyed it! It is a warm novel that is filled with everyday worries, and even though some of traditions talked about within the novel are a little outdated, the love and family aspects are so refreshing. These characters are so genuine in their actions and thoughts, that it was so fun to watch them grow and become who they were meant to be.

“Be worthy love, and love will come.”

Jo was my favorite. She stuck true to herself, found her own path, and often ignored what others said was proper. She really was authentic and didn't let silly things bring her down. I also loved Amy. I know she gets a bad reputation, but she's honestly very relatable. She strives to be bigger than her dreams, and she works hard for it. She's goofy and her little mispronunciations were hilarious. Beth was the sweetest little angel. I did wish that she wasn't so hard on herself, but when she talked about how she knew she would never live long, I did get misty eyed. Meg was the most boring to me, though it was fun to see married life from her point of view. I was greatly thrilled with all of their stories and how Alcott was able to blend all of their seperate lives into one coherent stream. The love and pride this family has for each other is truly admirable and I can totally see why this book is a classic. I hope to read it to my little family one day.
