Renegades by Marissa Meyer

"One cannot be brave who has no fear."

Renegades follows two stories as they intertwine in this fast paced novel. Nova, aka Nightmare, is a badass 'villian' whose uncle may or may not have started an entire revolution. She has the power to put anyone to sleep and she herself can't seem to sleep. She works with a small band of other villians whose ultimate goal is to take down the Renegades. Adrian, aka Sketch aka The Sentinel, is a Renegade who's dads are the most well known superheros who defeated the villians. He has a neat power to bring to life anything he draws. Adrian is struggling to figure out who the Nightmare is, solving his mom's murder, and trying to keep his values aligned with the Renegades beliefs. When Nova gets an idea to become a Renegade and infiltrate from the inside, Nova and Adrian's stories start to get more complicated and twisted. They both start to question what they've always known, and both start to wonder if things could really change.

“Heroism wasn't about what you could do, it was about what you did. It was about who you saved when they needed saving.”

I loved this book. I LOVED this book. The world building was insane and so cool. The powers that Meyer created were so unique and not your typical superhero bullshit. The idea of good vs. evil was a little skewed in this book, making both sides seem a little morally grey, which is always fun. Not only that, but Meyer had a way of making you love ALL of the characters. She gives you a mix of incredible characters who show growth in their own way on both sides of the good vs. evil problem and it leaves you totally confused on who to believe and root for.

Nova was such a fun protagonist. She was so clever and witty, and some of her remarks were hilarious. She struggles a lot with what she believes in and what she sees around her. Her faith to her family is a huge thing for her, and I'm excited to see how her continuation with the Renegades and her lil romance with Adrian develops.

Adrian is pretty cool. I didn't vibe with him at first, and I found his whole Sentinel gig weird. I grew to love him and his leadership. He is a quietly strong character who is devoted to the people he loves. I cannot wait to see what happens when Nova's identity is FINALLY reveled.

The Anarchists are so cute. I think Leroy is such a dad figure, even though he sweats toxins. Honey is adorable and deserves a big field with as much room for her bees as she needs. Phobia is cool and I hope we get to see more of him (especially since they hinted that he may or may not be involved with Adrian's moms death).

I really liked this book and I can't wait to get my hands on the next ones in the series. I have always liked Meyer's writing, and this book was just icing on the cake. I got into it so quickly and I'm already so invested. I can't wait to see how this series ends!
