Everyone knows and loves the Red Hot Chili Peppers, but man does this book really give an inside look into what it took to get the band to where it is today. My sister's fiancee is obsessed with RHCP and its been his favorite band for, like, ever. Last Christmas (yes, hush, I'm still catching up on my Last Christmas Books), he gave me a gift that mixed our two loves: books and bands. I had no expectations when I began to read this, and I was totally blown away.
Anthony Kiedis is the lead singer of RHCP and also wrote this autobiography to document his crazy life and the amazing people and journeys he went on. His life started dramatically and the ups and downs never seemed to stop for him. He recounts stories of his amazing travels (he met the Dalai Lama!!), of all the crazy things he did during his childhood, and his battle with drug addiction. His story is insanely chilling and very humbling. He writes in a very unique way, and you can see how we regrets some of the things from his past but has also found peace with his actions. He's a very spiritual guy, and some of his reflections are very moving. Not only do you get to see an up close and personal look into his life, but also in the creation and growth of the Red Hots. The bands history itself is a fascinating one, and I really enjoyed this book.
After reading this book and going to leave a review on Goodreads, I noticed that this novel seems to be a pretty controversial one. You either really like it, or totally hate it. I enjoyed it and didn't seem to mind it or view it in a super harsh. I would definitely go into reading it with an open mind!!
It's a face paced read that focuses on a lot of heavy topics. It's pretty cool though because there are a ton of pictures in it and there are also a bunch of lyrics to some of their most popular songs. All in all, I would really recommend this book to anyone interested in the band, but also in just the fascinating life and history of one man. Also, the last line made me tear up a little, and it's still stuck with me even after weeks of reading it.
