The Selection by Kiera Cass

I have seen this book all over BookTok recently, and I thought I would give it a try! Everyone was hyping it up, so I had pretty good expectations!
Now, don't get me wrong, it's not a bad book! I did enjoy it, but I was expecting a little more! The story follows America Singer as she is selected to do a sort of Bachelorette-type situation with the crown prince, Maxon, and 34 other girls. As you go through the book, you slowly learn about Illéa and how there is a numbered caste system with a lot of complicated rules. It's a super interesting concept and it's very cool to see how each caste plays a role in the country. America is in the lower caste, she's a 5, and you get to see how this impacts her life at the palace, with the other girls, and with all the viewers. There are a lot of little hints throughout the book (such as the rebels, the whole vague history of the country, and more) that I have hope will lead to some pretty cool plot points.
I liked America, but i found her to be very annoying at times. She can't really seem to make up her mind and she gives me "pick me" girl vibes. I didn't see a lot of character growth with her, but I have hope for the other books that follow. I think that Maxon is the best character so far. He's cute, clumsy, and awkward, and I like him. He is very naive about everything, which was a little obnoxious, but honestly, he's getting there. Aspen is a hard no. I hate him and he annoys me SO BAD!!! There are really no good qualities about him and I hope this love triangle gets settled quickly! All in all, it was a good book, but I'm hoping to see some more growth in the next one!
