We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

"Welcome to the beautiful Sinclair family."
There was a lot of hype surrounding this book on Booktok and on Goodreads. I was really interested in giving it a try because everyone raved about it, and I love a good stand-alone-plot-twist kind of book. I will give a warning though, the writing style is a little different and weird
and she
often writes like
this.
The entire book follows the main girl, Candence, as she navigates what happened to her after an accident befell her. She has grown up in a very wealth, old-money, new england style family with pretty blonde cousins and beautiful vacation homes. With this wealth and family background, there are of course many secrets in order to keep up the pretty little front they have.
"Be normal, now, she said. Right now, she said. Because you are. Because you can be."
Candence has had a terrible accident that she can't fully remember the details of, and she is determined to get those memories back. What is the most infuriating thing though, is that everyone in her family knows exactly what happened but will not tell her. Not even her three best friends Mirren, Gat, and Johnny. She is left to figure it out all on her own while struggling with a weird over-protective mother who hates when things are 'abnormal', a grandfather who is slowly falling victim to dementia, these crazy migraines, and her friends who seem to keep pulling away from her.
"You want to play God, Gat said."
Now, I was hooked in right away. I was going crazy trying to figure out what happened, and I genuinly was not expecting the twist at the end. I won't go into more details because it would literally ruin the whole book, but it caught me off guard. I did find the characters to be a little dull. They are true to their nature: snobby, fake, rich kids. I think Gat was the only one who had a little bit of flavor, but I also think that that was the whole point. They are the Sinclairs: nothing bad ever happens to them. I think it was a great book with a great twist, but I also found the writing style and the dramatics of the imagery to get a little dull near the end. I definitely recommend as a quick, easy read with a fun twist and morally grey characters!
Overall: 7.5/10

Trigger warnings: death, self harm, alcoholism
